Maintenance Mechanic

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Facilities and Asset Management will allow you to participate in the maintenance, repair, and construction of facilities and tactical infrastructure. This position starts at a salary of $16.77 (WG-10, Step 1) to $32.55 (WG-10, Step 05). In this Maintenance Mechanic position, you will become a key member of Homeland Security professionals. Typical work assignments may include:
Performing building maintenance, construction and repair tasks that require knowledge and application of a variety of trade practices associated with such occupations as electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, pipefitting, air-conditioning and refrigeration; Reading building plans, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, and responsible for planning and laying out the routing, placement and arrangement of industrial or similarly complex systems, circuits, controls, and equipment; Completing installations, modifications, and repairs, and loads and tests systems, circuits, equipment, and controls with little or no check during the progress or upon completion of work; and Planning and laying out the needed routing, placement, pitch, incline, and elevation of systems and equipment, figuring pressures in the systems and seeing that the piping, valves, fittings, and equipment are proper for the work, completing installations, modifications, and repairs with little or no check during their progress or upon completion, and Testing systems and equipment after completing work for proper circulation, flow, pressures, and leak-free joints. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WG-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element:
Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. To meet the screen out element(s), you should have experience performing the following duties:
Experience or training in at least two of the following building maintenance trades:
Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning Equipment, Painting, Pipefitting, and Carpentry. Ability and knowledge to complete a variety of tasks in these trades and be capable of reading and understanding blue prints, factory manuals, and operating manuals sufficient to accomplish the described tasks. Ability to use all tools, equipment, and materials used by maintenance mechanics. Failure to meet this Screen out Elements will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas:
Ability to interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, drawings and specifications, and other technical guides of varying degrees of complexity Knowledge of work practices, methods, processes, and skills in the crafts of electricity, carpentry, plumbing, iron work, welding, painting, concrete work, and appliance repair Skill in the use of test instruments, measuring devices, and hand and power tools Knowledge of shop mathematics (arithmetic), building operational requirements and the impact of space moves and alterations when specialized needs are involved. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 03/02/2020.
